About the tip calculator

The tip calculator is a free online tool that works out how much to add to a bill as a tip, what the total comes to after the tip has been added, and how much each person should pay when a group decides to split the bill.

Tipping habits vary widely around the world. In some countries, tipping is expected and forms part of a server's regular income. In others, tipping is optional and service charges are built into the bill. In Nigeria, tipping is generally optional and the amount is left to the customer's discretion, but a tip is often appreciated for good service.

This calculator handles the arithmetic so that you do not need to work out percentages in your head while at a table or at the counter. You enter the bill and the tip percentage you want to leave, and the calculator shows the resulting tip, total, and per-person amount.

How to use this tip calculator

Using the calculator requires two pieces of information and, optionally, a third.

  1. Enter the bill amount before the tip is added.
  2. Enter the tip percentage you want to leave.
  3. If the bill is being shared, enter the number of people splitting it.

The results update automatically as you type. You can try different tip percentages or different numbers of people to compare the outcome.

Tip calculation formula

The calculator uses two straightforward formulas.

Tip amount = Bill amount × (Tip percentage ÷ 100)

Total bill = Bill amount + Tip amount

Each person pays = Total bill ÷ Number of people

For example, if the bill is ₦12,500 and the tip percentage is 15 percent, the tip amount is ₦1,875, the total bill is ₦14,375, and if two people split the bill, each person pays ₦7,187.50.

The formula is the same regardless of the currency or the size of the bill. Only the numbers change.

Understanding the results

Tip amount

The tip amount is the value of the gratuity you are leaving. It is calculated by multiplying the bill by the tip percentage divided by one hundred.

Total bill including tip

The total bill is the original bill plus the tip amount. This is the amount you would hand over or pay in full before any further splitting.

Each person pays

If the bill is being shared, the total including tip is divided equally between the number of people entered. If the group wants to divide the amount unevenly, for example to reflect different orders, the calculator will not handle that — you would need to allocate the amounts manually.

Common tipping practices

Tipping practice varies by country, city and type of service. The following are general observations rather than rules, and the actual amount you leave is a personal choice.

  • In many restaurants, ten to twenty percent of the bill is a common range.
  • Delivery services are often tipped a small fixed amount or a small percentage.
  • Cafés and counter-service venues may not expect a tip at all.
  • Some venues add a service charge directly to the bill, in which case an extra tip may not be necessary.
  • When in doubt, it is reasonable to leave a tip in proportion to the quality of the service.

If a service charge has already been added to the bill, check that before adding a separate tip. Doubling up on service charges is easy to do by accident.

Why splitting a bill can be useful

Splitting a bill evenly between a group is convenient when everyone has shared the food or when the individual orders are close in value. It removes the need to allocate specific items to specific people and keeps the process quick.

When orders are very different in price — for example, one person has a starter and a dessert while another only has a drink — an even split may not feel fair. In those cases it may be better to divide the bill by item or to agree on a different arrangement in advance.

Limitations

The following points apply to this calculator.

  • It assumes the tip is calculated on the bill amount only.
  • It assumes the bill is split equally between all the people entered.
  • It does not include taxes, service charges or other fees that may already be on the bill.
  • It does not round the result to a specific currency denomination.
  • It does not store or transmit the amounts you enter.

For a bill that includes taxes, service charges or mixed orders, work out the total cost first, then use the calculator on that total if you want to add a further tip.

Frequently asked questions

How is a tip calculated?
A tip is calculated by multiplying the bill amount by the tip percentage divided by one hundred. For example, a fifteen percent tip on a bill of ₦12,500 is ₦1,875.
Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?
This calculator applies the tip to the bill amount you enter. Whether that amount already includes tax is up to you. Some people prefer to tip on the pre-tax amount; others tip on the total. Either approach is reasonable.
How do I split a bill evenly?
Divide the total bill — including the tip — by the number of people sharing. For example, a total of ₦14,375 divided by two people gives ₦7,187.50 per person.
What if the restaurant already added a service charge?
If a service charge is already included, an extra tip is optional. Check the bill carefully before adding a second tip. The calculator does not detect a service charge — you would need to account for it yourself.
How much should I tip?
There is no single correct amount. Tipping habits vary by country and venue, and are ultimately a personal choice. A common range in many restaurant settings is ten to twenty percent of the bill, but the amount is up to you.
Does this calculator store my information?
No. All calculations run in your browser. The amounts you enter are not sent to or stored on this website.
