About the image conversion tool

The image conversion tool changes an image from one format to another. It is intended for everyday tasks such as converting a PNG screenshot into a JPEG, converting a photograph into a modern WEBP file, or preparing an image in a specific format for a website or application.

All processing happens in your browser using JavaScript. When you select an image, the tool reads it directly from your device, re encodes it in the format you choose, and downloads the result from the same browser session. Your image is not uploaded to any server.

This approach has practical advantages. There is no waiting time for uploads, no server side copies of your images, and the tool works even on a slow connection once the page has loaded.

How to convert an image

Using the tool takes only a few steps.

  1. Select an image from your device, or drag it into the upload area.
  2. Choose an output format: JPEG, PNG or WEBP.
  3. Adjust the quality level if the output is JPEG or WEBP.
  4. Click the convert button to process the image.
  5. Download the converted file when the download begins.

The tool shows a preview of the original and converted images side by side, together with each file size and format, so you can compare them before saving.

Choosing an output format

Each image format has strengths and weaknesses. Choosing the right format depends on how the image will be used.

  • JPEG is well suited to photographs and other images with smooth transitions.
  • PNG is well suited to screenshots, logos, diagrams and images with text.
  • WEBP is a modern format that supports both lossy and lossless compression.

JPEG does not support transparency, so transparent areas become white when a PNG or WEBP image is converted to JPEG. PNG is lossless, so the quality slider has no effect when PNG is selected. WEBP is a versatile modern format that produces smaller files than JPEG or PNG in many cases, at a similar level of quality.

Understanding the quality setting

The quality slider controls how much detail is preserved when the output format is JPEG or WEBP. A higher value keeps more detail but produces a larger file. A lower value produces a smaller file with less detail.

  • A value around 80 to 90 percent is suitable for photographs that will be printed.
  • A value around 60 to 80 percent works well for photographs viewed on screen.
  • A value around 40 to 60 percent is useful for thumbnails and quick previews.
  • A value below 40 percent is only appropriate when file size is the main concern.

PNG does not use the quality setting because PNG is a lossless format. The PNG option is best used when image fidelity matters more than file size.

Practical uses

  • Converting a PNG screenshot into a JPEG to reduce file size.
  • Converting a photograph to WEBP to reduce the file size for a website.
  • Converting a WEBP image to PNG when a PNG is required by an application.
  • Preparing an image in a specific format for an upload form.
  • Making image files easier to open in applications that support a limited set of formats.

For repeated work on many files, a dedicated desktop tool is often faster than working through a browser. The tool here is best suited to occasional, one at a time tasks.

Limitations

  • Transparency is lost when converting to JPEG.
  • Converting a JPEG to PNG increases file size because PNG is lossless.
  • Very low quality settings can produce visible artefacts.
  • Very large images may be slow to process on devices with limited memory.
  • The tool processes one image at a time and does not offer batch conversion.

If an image contains sharp edges, text or fine patterns, it is worth checking the preview carefully before saving, since lossy compression can blur these features at low quality settings.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The image is read directly in your browser and processed with JavaScript. It is not sent to any server.
Which format should I choose?
Use JPEG for photographs, PNG for screenshots and diagrams, and WEBP when you want a modern format that supports both lossy and lossless compression. JPEG does not support transparency.
Why does the quality slider not apply to PNG?
PNG is a lossless format. It stores the image exactly, so there is no quality setting to adjust. When the output is PNG, the quality slider has no effect on the result.
Will converting a JPEG to PNG make the image look better?
No. Converting a JPEG to PNG does not restore detail that was lost when the original JPEG was created. It will, however, prevent any further loss if the image is edited and saved again in PNG format.
Can I convert an image to a format it does not support?
Any common image format can be opened by the tool and converted into JPEG, PNG or WEBP. Rare or unusual formats may not be supported by the browser, in which case the image cannot be loaded.
Is the tool free?
Yes. The image conversion tool is free to use and does not require an account or registration.

Important information

This tool is provided for general informational and personal use. It performs format conversion in your browser and does not provide legal, financial or professional advice.

Always keep an original copy of any important image before converting it. Conversion rewrites the file, and when the output is a lossy format some detail may be lost in a way that cannot be reversed.

For images that will be printed at large sizes, or used in professional publishing, work from a high quality original and apply lossy conversion only to the final output copy.
